Calafoda

Calafoda is a rough and ready village built on the upper reaches of one of the Dearg Quintas, one of the tributaries of the Quintas River. It is situated just downstream of the Dayas waterfall where two smaller steams violently collide and merge. Calafoda was a mere hamlet till the boom in mining started over fifty years ago and has grown significantly since then. The village has become a port for those using the Dearg Quintas and Quinas River as a means of transport. Indeed in theory a person could sail all the way down to the Oslir River and onwards to the Lunar Heartlands. Unfortunately rapids and shallows make it an impractical for the bulk transport of ore but it is ideal for small boats such as curraghs and coracles.

Calafoda has a mixed and transient population directly linked to the mining of the hills. It has a handful of inns and taverns and more than a few shops for prospectors who bravely go off in to the Hydras rarely to return. The Hetman is Bermin son of Bermin (pictured right) whose grandfather married the sole surviving resident a couple of generations ago. They are of the Quintal Clan which normally has lands far to the east but settled here instead. Malicious tales speak of fleeing a scandal or blood feud but no one really knows. The present Bermin pays his respects to the Barastaros Tribal Chief Avric the Halt and to the local Clan Chief Phoronestes of the Forghar at Brathairmor. The settlement is far from a safe place to live with frequent clashes with brigands and even chaos creatures from the Hydra Mountains. Ten summers ago the whole of Calafoda fled before a lesser hydra and only returned when it had moved on. That said a trader can make a good living off ‘soon to be dead’ prospectors.

Within Calafoda is a shrine-market to Issaries the trader god. By the dock is a small shrine to the Quintas the spirit of the river and by the west gate a small temple to Temple of Aselia and Torkal, mining deities. The village has a stockade and none are allowed entry after dark. All disputes are settled by Bermin and his kinsmen in a straight forward and practical way. Bremin is renowned as a skiled warrior who will not shy away from violence but he also keeps his men in hand.
